I heard that when John Deere built the Augusta plant, they had planned on building 13,000 JD 4000 series a year, but the demand became so great they went to 3 shifts to produce 44,000 the first year. Thus a lot of the reliability problems because of the 4000 series being rushed into production,I also heard the JD 4100 had the least problems.Any one else heard this?

I've heard the same thing, but have no idea at all whether it is based on facts. Are all of the 4000 series built at the same plant? ....

Hillbilly, I've heard the same thing. Don't know if there's any truth to the story or not. I do know that the 4100 is different than the other 4000 series tractors (they are built in Japan 100% by Yanmar). The entire design is somewhat different than the rest. I do know that my 4100 has performed flawlessly for me. When I compare the 4100 to the 4200+ models, I'm left with the impression that the 4100 is put together more precisely and is more durable for the long term. Of course this could just be my bias against composite body parts (4200+) and favoring of steel body components (4100). ....

Hey Jim,
The 4100 is not built by yanmar. It is built by Kanzaki. The 7-990 is Yanmar ....

There sure seems to be confusion over this issue. Everyone I've talked to including my dealer told me the 4100 is built by Yanmar. ....

Jim Youtz,

Yanmar makes the engines for all of the JD compacts currently in production (or so I have been told by my dealer). They are extremely tough, tested and reliable. ....

My 4100 runs great-no problems. Engine by Yanmar, balance by some third world I'm sure. Minor warranty bugs which dealer ships me the parts and I install. I have a Curtis hard-side cab with heat which is a big bonus. Never got the the wheel nut virus which plaques the 4200-4300's. ....
